A Day Like This

I had to write a poem for my creative writing class. I decided to write a persona poem (which means writing in the perspective of another person). So here it is.

A Day Like This

A day like this is usually beautiful,
and after I leave, I’ll still look at it that way.
I stand here on earth looking at the heavens,
the place that I long to call home.
Looking back at my life I question,
Was my faith enough for Your kingdom’s cause?

A day like this is usually beautiful,
and after I leave, I’ll still look at it that way.
A distraught audience stands before me,
all eyes on me, Why me God?
While fear clouds my mindless body,
they eagerly await the first throw.

A day like this is usually beautiful,
and after I leave, I’ll still look at it that way.
That angel blinded me with the power of light
and took me back to the start.
The place where I first believed
and let the Spirit lead my soul inside me.

A day like this is usually beautiful,
and after I leave, I’ll still look at it that way.
I remember the joy in proclaiming,
enduring wretched pain after loss,
the pure love of adventure,
and the satisfaction of simplicity.

A day like this is usually beautiful,
and after I leave, I’ll still look at it that way.
I kneel face down before the pack
The leader shouts his order
The weighted rocks pierce through my flesh.
I, a martyr in the making, cry out.
But I can’t feel or hear a thing
because that angel brings me
to Him who saved my life.

This day is beautiful because I am finally home.
